Geohosting

Geohosting is a complex system composed of single components-applications. These components are integrated into one fully functional system. This complex system enables easy creation and publication of new map compositions. It enables you to work not only with your own geographic data but also through web services with external geographic data. The number of available online data sources is still increasing. The advantage is that original data stay at the level where they are collected and maintained. Therefore there is no duplication of data. Up-to-date source data guarantee up-to-date map compositions.

There are three steps for using Geohosting:

  • Uploading the data to the server

The data you want to publish on the internet should be primarily collected on the server. Data sources can be either internal (database or files) or external (not in direct possession of the user). The external sources are accessible through web services (WMS and WFS). The mutual communication is based mainly on OGC standards.

  • Creation of the map composition

Afterwards, the requested map can be composed. The map composition can contain your own data from an internal server as well as other published external data sources. All these data sources can be used for the creation of new map compositions in the web interface. The web services can be accessed in two ways. Either by typing the address of the web service or by searching the web service in the connected metadata catalogue. Data can be in raster as well as in vector form. Vector data can be visualised in various colours and/or symbols. For each map composition own access rights can be defined. Each composition is also tagged by metadata sentence and registered in the metadata catalogue.

  • Publication of the map composition

Finally you can set up the parameters for the publication of the new composition according to your requirements. This enables access by other users. Such new map compositions can be portrayed by the user by two means. It can be done either using web browsers (Open Layers, GoogleMap, DHTML client) or using desktop viewers (GoogleEarth). The map compositions can be published as a brand new web service (WMS or WFS). It plays an important role.

The new map compositions can be used for example in mobile devices and e-learning applications. This solution is of particular advantage to those working in a big team or supplying information to the public. The system is fully compliant with INSPIRE principles.
